Current project: “Stuck in the Middle: Opportunities and Challenges for Third Countries Amidst US-China Tech Tensions”

US-China great power rivalry has created areas of competition throughout the world, leaving third countries vulnerable to political, economic, and cultural pressures from both sides. This rivalry has simultaneously created opportunities for states to develop innovative forms of autonomy, a phenomenon particularly pronounced and consequential in technology policy spheres. Our research adopts a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to illuminate the policy responses, economic and social consequences, and human experiences of third countries “stuck in the middle” of two quickly bifurcating digital systems. Preliminary sub-fields of interest include 5G telecommunications, AI, smart cities, and data governance.
